Does white/biracial kid's hair grow faster than black kid's hair?

I know this is going to sound like a stupid question, but hey that's what yahoo answers is for right? :) I have a daughter who will be 4 in October, a 2yo boy and a 4 month old daughter. The 3yo girl is biracial. I'm black and her total deadbeat runaway father is from South India so her hair is long with tight curls. It looks something like Tia and Tamara Mowry's hair did when they did the show "Sister Sister." When you stretch it out it stops right where her butt crack is. She has never had her hair cut soooo...my naive question of the day is does white/biracial hair grow faster than black kid's hair? Because you hardly ever see black kids with long hair by the time they reach her age. Is it because of the high rate of hair breakage or does it grow slower? Or does her hair grow extremely faster than most kids?

The average white person's hair grows about 1/2 inch per month.

I saw on Oprah once (years ago when she was cool and did the makeover/who's my daddy/etc. shows!) that black people's hair grows just as fast as any other race's hair (Asian, Mexican, etc.). The reason it SEEMS like it's growing more slowly is because many black people put very heavy, greasy, thick, waxy oils/lotions/pomades on their scalp and in their hair, and it actually clogs the pores in the scalp and forces the hair to grow more slowly.

My daughter is not mixed and her hair is longer than her cousin who is mixed with black and white. When you press my daughters hair it is way longer than her cousins. It depends on the hair, it has nothing to do with biracial kids. Haven't you seen biracial kids with short hair that is dry and it looks like they should had better grain of hair? It all depends on the hair itself, not the race of the child.

Interesting question. I am not sure about the science behind this...but I can tell you my son is white, he's almost two and he is still practically bald!!

I think it probably all depends on genetics

Your question's perfectly fine :o)

I'm biracial, and my hair has been really long for most of my life (with the exception of a big mistake that was the Jheri Curl in '85). And you know, I find that it does grow pretty fast! I think the longest it's ever been was down to my knees when I was five. In fact, it was my fifth birthday, and my mother spent all day doing my hair like Bo Derek's in "10".

Your daughter sounds like a real cutie, sorry about the deadbeat dad.

its not necessarily race, but it is genes. i am Hispanic/white and my father had very thick, tight curls. Could be described as "nappy". my mom's hair is thin and straight without much wave to it. the mix of these two is me, FRIZZ! lol

my kids both have hair that is thicker than mine (their dad is African-American) my son's hair is thinner than his sister and it grows faster than all of us.

its not that nappy hair grows slower, it just tends to be thicker and more brittle and has more breakage. African American women tend to be very hard on their hair as well. a woman who nurtures her hair and doesn't relax could have long beautiful curls in not so long a period of time (think Erika sadhu)

My daughter is half caucasian/half South Indian and I'm always shocked how slow her hair grows compared to mine or other caucasians.

Her hair is curly and will go to her bottom when wet. She is 5 and has had only 2 haircuts.

She's my DAH - ling!

That's why black people always have extensions and wigs on
